VoTV videos sharing their affliction by tobacco related diseases showed in the Jail Sensitization program. Shri T P Senkumar, Director General of Prisons & Correctional Services said he was awaiting Government approval for his proposal to ban smoking in jails. Permission to smoke in jails goes against the Hon’ble Supreme Court direction and the guidelines of the Government of India.
Voice of Tobacco Victims (VoTV) was conducted to sensitize the Hon’able speaker of Kerala Legislative Assembly, Mr. G Karthikeyan. The Hon’ble Speaker interacted with tobacco-induced cancer patients Shri Balan; Shri Rabi J; Shri Sukumaran and gave a patient listening to their narratives.
The Director of the Regional Cancer Centre and Chairman – VoTV Kerala Dr. Paul Sebastian, briefed about the negative public health impact in the State from tobacco use. Dr Sebastian said that this public health malady affecting Kerala can be averted by raising tobacco taxes t0 65% similar to Rajasthan, which can reduce tobacco consumption thereby reducing the death rates.
