Tobacco Victims seek help from Kerala Governor for tobacco control in Kerala
VoTV was conducted by Dr. Paul Sebastian in meeting with Governor of Kerala. The meeting intention was mainly concentration on making all the educational institutions tobacco free. Dr Paul Sebastian, Director, RCC and Vice Chairman, Tobacco Free Kerala led the team.
Dr Sebastian began the discussions by highlighting the case of two young cancer patients who were present in the team. He explained to the Governor that the youngsters had started using tobacco products in their teens, got addicted and became cancer victims. Dr Sebastian then cited GATS figures of tobacco use in Kerala and pointed out to the Governor of the total 50,000 new cancer cases in Kerala, over 40 per cent in males are tobacco induced. The economic burden from tobacco use was also highlighted.
Requested, for the Governor’s kind intervention for making all Kerala educational institutions, especially higher education institutions, tobacco free and for his mentoring in driving the model district plan to sustainable competition. Governor interacted personally with both victims and they explained their experience to Governor.
