Voice of Tobacco Victim (VoTV) on the occasion of World No Tobacco Day – Say “No To Tobacco Advertisement”
A VoTV event was conducted in a programme organized by Salaam Bombay Foundation on May 30th at Azad Maidan to launch an enforcement drive against violation of COTPA section 5 in Mumbai.
The event had a chief guest Mr. Zagade (FDA Commissioner), Mr. Tubhe (Education officer), Dr. Umarji (HOD, OMDR, Government Dental College). Mr. Zagade made a remarkable opening statement and congratulated the efforts of NGO for tobacco control. He also said that in last one year a lot of gutka products have been seized in the state of Maharashtra. The battle still continues and we should try to end this tobacco menace so no more such world no tobacco day is been observed.
Two VoTV patients shared their story and how advertisement influenced them for the increase uptake of the habit. The session was followed by opening of the The ‘Wall of Shame’ which was displayed at the venue. The ‘Wall of Shame’ displayed picture of those pan shops who are displaying boards promoting various cigarette brands. A play prepared by SBF children followed, by setting a context of the WVTD theme: Ban on tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship.
To intensify the event, a group of children along with VoTV patients visited nearby pan shops. Tobacco selling vendors were made aware of the existing law and also sensitized about the seriousness of the effect of POS advertisement on the consumption habit of youths. In addition, children also put a warning board at the pan shop as prescribed under the law. The event was extensively covered by the media personnel.
