Delhi bans Gutka and Pan Masala (containing tobacco & nicotine)

A PIL was filed by in public interest by Doctors For You (DFY) against the state of Delhi for failing to take appropriate action towards banning gutkha and other forms of chewing tobacco products such as zarda, pan masala, gul and bajjar.  The ban on these toxic and highly addictive chewing tobacco products is mandated by the law vide Regulation 2.3.4 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011 made under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

Hearing this PIL, Delhi High Court ordered Delhi Government on 21st August to implement the FSSAI notification within 2 weeks. Complying with this order, Delhi banned Gutka on 11th September 2012.
